Il vertice di Reykjavík si prefiggeva di dare serie direttive su una sostanziale riduzione della produzione e/o eventuale aggiornamento di materiale missilistico a media o lunga gittata che potesse colpire indirizzi di importante rilevanza europea
Il vertice si tenne l'11 e il 12 ottobre 1986 tra gli allora Segretario generale del Partito Comunista dell'Unione Sovietica Michail Gorbačëv e il Presidente degli Stati Uniti d'America Ronald Reagan con l'obiettivo della riduzione delle testate nucleari, presso Höfði, a Reykjavík, in Islanda, Paese scelto per le sue caratteristiche di neutralità e relativamente equidistante geograficamente fra le due potenze.
