Nota per la cinta muraria affacciata sul Mar Ionio, unica integra in tutta la Calabria, che racchiude il centro storico per circa un chilometro ed è inframezzata da otto torrioni antichi, la quale ospita la concattedrale di San Michele Arcangelo.
Cariati è situata lungo la costa dei Saraceni, sul mar Ionio, nei pressi della foce del torrente Nicà .
