Civita Castellana è un comune italiano di 15 306 abitanti della provincia di Viterbo nel Lazio. È sorta sulle rovine di Falerii Veteres città dei falisci di epoca arcaica.
La città è situata su uno sperone tufaceo, tra le profonde gole di due affluenti del Treja che raggiunge dopo poco la foce nel Tevere, ai piedi dei Monti Cimini, lungo la via Flaminia nella Valle del Tevere. Si trova in una zona originata dalle eruzioni del vulcano Vicano che hanno generato il tufo rosso, che caratterizza il territorio. In seguito all'innalzamento dell'area, l'azione erosiva delle acque ha dato origine alle profonde gole che sono uno dei caratteri più suggestivi del paesaggio.
