È stato un comune autonomo fino al 31 dicembre 2016, prima di confluire con Montemaggiore al Metauro e Serrungarina nel comune di Colli al Metauro.
Saltara è collocata su un colle a 160 m s.l.m., che domina la bassa Val Metauro. Il territorio comunale, non molto esteso, si trova a nord del fiume Metauro, chiuso tra quest'ultimo e le colline a ridosso della valle. Fa parte della Comunità montana del Metauro.
