Il 2 gennaio 1927, eliminata la provincia di Caserta, Gallo Matese passò alla provincia di Campobasso, ritornando alla provincia di Caserta l'11 giugno 1945, quando questa fu ripristinata dopo la seconda guerra mondiale.
Situato al confine con la regione Molise, sorge su un colle al centro di una verde vallata occupata in parte da un lago.
