L'attuale territorio del comune di Ponte di Piave deriva dalla fusione in epoca napoleonica del Comune di Ponte di Piave e dell'ex comune di Busco con San Nicolò per regio decreto del 28/09/1810. Sempre durante il Regno d'Italia si ritrova ad essere nel Dipartimento del Tagliamento .
Durante la prima guerra mondiale, trovandosi sulla linea di combattimento sul Piave, fu distrutta dalle artiglierie italiane che da destra del fronte sparavano agli invasori austro-ungarici alla sinistra l’antica precedente chiesa e campanile del 1696 dedicati sempre a san Tommaso di Canterbury. Come capitò insomma a tutti i paesi sul fronte del Piave; prendiamo ad esempio Negrisia con la precedente chiesa seicentesca. A Ponte di Piave nel dopoguerra tra il 1921 ed il 1924 fu ricostruito il complesso della chiesa e il campanile odierni su progetto degli architetti Cabiati, Alpago Novello e dell'ing. Schiratti e consacrata in seguito nel 1926.
