Situato alle pendici dei Monti Sibillini, è il secondo comune della provincia per estensione territoriale, preceduto solo dal capoluogo.
Il paese è sito in posizione digradante dal versante sud-occidentale di un colle sulla destra del fiume Tenna. È abbracciato dall'anfiteatro dei Monti Sibillini cui se ne scorgono in ampi panorami i più alti picchi: dal Monte Vettore a sud, al Monte Sibilla, al Monte Priora , fino al Monte Amandola e in lontananza verso nord il Pizzo di Meta.
