Il territorio comunale è situato nel basso Salento e include un tratto della costa del mar Ionio. Il centro abitato, sorge in parte sul sito dell'antica Ozan , importante città messapica. È sede della diocesi di Ugento-Santa Maria di Leuca.
Il comune di Ugento è stato riconosciuto come città d'arte e località ad economia turistica dalla regione Puglia nel 2008 per le sue bellezze architettoniche, archeologiche ed ambientali.
