È nota per essere la città in cui vissero e morirono san Francesco, patrono d'Italia, e santa Chiara.
La città di Assisi è situata sul versante nord-occidentale del monte Subasio, in posizione moderatamente rialzata rispetto alla Valle Umbra settentrionale, a circa 26 km a sudest di Perugia.
