Costruita sulla facciata di Palazzo Poli da Nicola Salvi, il concorso indetto da papa Clemente XII nel 1731 era stato inizialmente vinto dallo scultore francese Lambert-Sigisbert Adam ma successivamente l'incarico passò a Salvi: si dice che il cambiamento fosse dovuto al fatto che il pontefice non voleva affidare l'opera a uno straniero, invece un'altra versione spiega che Adam doveva ritornare in Francia.
