Costruito tra il 1776 e il 1778 su progetto del colonnello messinese Francesco Sicuro, grazie ai beni confiscati ai Gesuiti in seguito alla loro espulsione da Napoli, che costituivano il cosiddetto “Fondo di separazione dei lucri” , venne inaugurato il 31 luglio 1779 con la rappresentazione L'infedele fedele di G.B. Lorenzi, musicata da Domenico Cimarosa, visitato da Mozart.
