Sestri Ponente è uno dei quartieri del ponente genovese, tra i più vasti e popolosi dell'intero comune.
Comune autonomo fino al 1926, quando insieme ad altri diciotto comuni del genovesato fu inglobato nel comune di Genova, per costituire la cosiddetta Grande Genova, nella ripartizione amministrativa del comune fu dapprima una "delegazione" e poi una "circoscrizione". Nella nuova ripartizione in vigore dal 2005 fa parte del Municipio VI Medio Ponente, insieme al quartiere di Cornigliano.
