Il cancello è in Piazza del Duomo a Pisa.
La porta fu aperta nel 1562 dall'allora duca di Firenze Cosimo I de' Medici nelle preesistenti mura medievali ed è nota come Porta Nuova perché più recente delle originarie Porta del Leone e Porta Santa Maria come ingresso alla Piazza del Duomo.
Durante la prima guerra mondiale dalla stazione di San Rossore correva un binario che, con un'apertura in prossimità del cancello, entrava direttamente nell'ospedale di Santa Chiara per trasportare i feriti dal fronte. Questa apertura esiste ancora.
Negli anni '30 furono aperti i due archi laterali per consentire il passaggio sicuro dei pedoni, vista la presenza della linea 1 della rete tranviaria di Pisa, che collegava la stazione centrale a piazza Duomo.
