Il grande Palazzo Pretorio di Pistoia occupa quasi tutto il lato sud-ovest di piazza del Duomo. Costruita tra il 1367 e il 1389, è sempre stata sede del tribunale cittadino, funzione che svolge ancora oggi, e ospita anche gli appartamenti del Podestà. Nella prima metà dell'800 il palazzo subì un importante ampliamento, ma si conservarono molte parti della struttura originaria. Davvero suggestiva la visita al cortile, dove è ancora ben conservata la panca in pietra del XIV secolo su cui sedeva il Podestà durante le udienze. Nel XV secolo il soffitto fu decorato con affreschi, ai quali vennero aggiunti in seguito gli stemmi dei podestà successivi. La facciata principale è in pietra ed è caratterizzata da due ordini di bifore, le cinque centrali al primo piano, in stile gotico, risalenti all'impianto trecentesco dell'edificio.
