Piazza Castelnuovo, insieme all'adiacente Piazza Ruggero Settimo, forma un unico spazio urbano, comunemente chiamato Piazza Politeama, grazie alla presenza del Teatro Politeama , il secondo teatro più importante della città dopo il Teatro Massimo.
La piazza rappresenta una delle piazze più frequentate della città.
In Piazza Castelnuovo sono presenti la struttura denominata “Palchetto della Musica” (opera di Salvatore Valenti), il monumento a Carlo Cottone (opera di Giovan Battista Palazzotto e Domenico Costantino), le sculture “Nautica” (opera di Mario Rutelli), “Lavoro " (opera di Benedetto Civiletti) e "Senzatetto" (opera di Pasquale Civiletti).
La piazza è intitolata a Carlo Cottone, principe di Castelnuovo, uno dei fautori della Costituzione siciliana del 1812.
