La chiesa e il monastero di Santa Maria di Valverde o delle Giummare furono fondati agli inizi del XII secolo dalla contessa normanna Giulietta, celebre dama di Sciacca dal 1100 al 1136, che trascorreva il suo tempo libero nei pressi del pozzo che porta il suo nome.
Il nome " delle Giummare " deriva dal tipo di palma nana, localmente chiamata " Giimmara" .
A parte il portale e la finestra centrale, che sono barocchi, il resto ricorda un castello medievale . La chiesa sfondava l'asse del monastero 'doppio', abitato, come consentito dal diritto canonico, da monache e monaci cluniacensi. Ai lati del portale crescono due palme nane in ricordo delle giummare (nome saccense delle palme).
La chiesa conserva opere d'arte tra cui tele di Gaspare Testone da Saccia, dipinti e affreschi di Mariano Rossi.
Durante la guerra, padre Michele Arena raccolse qui i trovatelli e diede loro una casa.
