Mersch è il (prospero) centro dell'area agricola in Lussemburgo. Il Mamer e l'Eisch, due fiumi, scorrono nell'Alzette. Che questa sia una zona ricca è evidenziato dalla densità dei castelli: Mersch ne ha uno del dodicesimo secolo. A sud-ovest di Mersch se ne trovano ben sette; si parla infatti appropriamente della Valle dei Sette Castelli. A nord di Mersch si trova Colmar-Berg, dominata interamente dall'imponente castello dei granduchi. A Pettingen, a nord di Mersch, c'è un castello del tredicesimo secolo. Presso il più a sud Schoenfels sorge un castello con un donjon del sedicesimo secolo.
