In virtù delle numerose istituzioni politiche e culturali che vi hanno sede, è considerata la capitale della minoranza albanese in Macedonia. Come tutto il nord-ovest della Macedonia, anche la città è a larga maggioranza etnica albanese.
Situata nel nord-ovest della Macedonia, a circa 86 chilometri ad ovest della capitale Skopje, Tetovo sorge a quasi 500 metri di altezza sulle pendici dei Monti Šar ed attraversata dal fiume Pena.
