Il castello di Leida è uno dei più antichi esempi ancora esistenti di un castello nei Paesi Bassi. L'edificio si trova nel punto in cui i due bracci del Reno si uniscono. L'edificio rotondo si trova su una motta, un colle artificiale. Dallo studio archeologico è emerso che intorno all'anno 1000 in questo luogo c'era già un edificio in legno. Nell'undicesimo secolo, il colle fu innalzato diverse volte fino a circa 9 metri sopra il livello circostante.
