Il Markermeer è conosciuto con i diversi nomi di Hoornsche Polder o Zuidelijk IJsselmeer. Il lago, con una superficie di ben 700 km², è incastrato tra Noord-Holland, Flevoland e il Noordelijk IJsselmeer. La profondità del lago è di 2-4 metri nella maggior parte dei punti ed è chiamato così in onore della penisola di Marken, a sud-ovest del lago. Il termine Markermeer deriva dalla pianificazione della bonifica di quest’area in Markerwaard. Poiché quel piano è stato abbandonato, il termine Zuidelijk IJsselmeer è in effetti più corretto. Infatti, sia la parte settentrionale che quella meridionale sono resti dell’ex Zuiderzee e costituiscono un’unità storica e geografica. Il Markermeer si prolunga a sud nell'IJmeer e a nord nel (Noordelijke) IJsselmeer.
