Onderbanken faceva parte, fino all'abolizione delle plusregioni nel 2015, della ex plusregione Parkstad Limburg. Onderbanken si è fuso il 1 gennaio 2019 con i comuni vicini di Nuth e Schinnen per formare il comune di Beekdaelen.
