Nel 1360 si scrive per la prima volta di una tenuta chiamata Drakesteyn. La vecchia storia di Drakensteyn è strettamente legata a quella della Ridderhofstede Drakenburg, che si trovava nelle vicinanze e fu demolita nel XIX secolo.

Nel Secolo d'Oro, nella Laagte di Pijnenburg, vengono restaurati e costruiti molti castelli e ville, come Soestdijk - il successivo Palazzo Soestdijk -, Castello De Hooge Vuursche, De Eult, Pijnenburg, Eeuwijckshoeve.


Nel 1780 avviene una ristrutturazione che cambia l'aspetto della casa: le colonne ioniche vengono rimosse. Nel 1807 Drakensteyn diventa proprietà del sig. Paulus Wilhelmus Bosch, sindaco di Utrecht. La casa rimane poi nella famiglia per 150 anni, fino a quando nel 1959 Frederik Lodewijk Bosch van Drakestein la vende alla Principessa Beatrix. Lei fa restaurare il castello e vi si trasferisce nel 1963. Dopo essere diventata regina, si trasferisce a L'Aia nel 1981. Da allora Drakensteyn è utilizzato come residenza estiva e per ospiti.
