Spier è un comune nel comune di Midden-Drenthe nella provincia olandese di Drenthe ed è situato a est dell'autostrada A28, all'incrocio con la strada provinciale N855. A ovest dell'A28 si trova il Parco Nazionale Dwingelderveld.
La prima menzione del luogo risale al 1212 o 1213 come Spehoerne. Nel 1550 venne menzionato sia come Spyrhoren che Spyer. Nel XVII secolo si parlava di quindici fattorie, che all'epoca costituivano una comunità abitativa.
