Description

Il nome Doorn deriva da Thorheim, che significa luogo di residenza di Thor, Dio del tuono. Doorn si trova al confine tra l'altopiano dell'Utrechtse Heuvelrug e l'area più bassa del Kromme Rijn. I tumuli funerari nelle foreste ricordano tempi antichi. La prima menzione risale all'855. Nel Medioevo, Doorn era composta da due corti cavalleresche, Huis Doorn e castello Moersbergen, e da molti campi di erica, terreni agricoli e aree boschive. Anche lo scrittore Simon Vestdijk visse gran parte della sua vita al Torenlaan 4. Maarten Maartens, un rinomato scrittore negli anni 1890-1910, fece costruire a Doorn un piccolo castello, Zonheuvel. Dal 2006, Doorn (10.000 abitanti) è il centro amministrativo del Comune di Utrechtse Heuvelrug, che comprende, oltre a diversi quartieri, anche Driebergen, Leersum, Amerongen, Maarn, Maarsbergen e Overberg.
