Si trova a nord della città di Leeuwarden, tra Stiens e Hijum, con cui collabora molto. Nel territorio del villaggio scorre il Finkumervaart, che dispone anche di un porto per i diportisti. Nel 2021 il villaggio contava 160 abitanti. Sotto il villaggio rientra anche l'aggregato Poelhuizen. Finkum è nato come un terp abitato intorno all'anno cristiano. Questo terp fu sollevato su una duna costiera. L'espansione di un terp abitato in un villaggio è probabilmente dovuta a una residenza estiva del monastero di Mariëngaarde a Hallum. Il monastero possedeva molte terre nella zona. Quando il monastero perse il potere nel 1580, quattro famiglie nobili lo presero in possesso.
