Fort Kijkuit è stato costruito intorno al 1845 ed è una delle numerose fortificazioni in questa regione della Nuova Olanda Waterlinie. Questa area poteva essere sommersa (chiamato inondazione) in caso di minaccia di guerra per ostacolare il nemico. Attraverso un ingegnoso sistema di chiuse, in caso di minaccia di guerra, circa 50 cm d'acqua copriva i prati. In questo modo l'acqua diventava troppo profonda per essere attraversata con cavalli o cannoni, ma non abbastanza profonda per navigare. Inoltre, fossati e strade diventavano invisibili, causando disorientamento al nemico. I punti deboli in luoghi strategici come un incrocio, una chiusa o un canale venivano difesi con una fortezza, come nel caso di fort Kijkuit. Questa fortezza è ora gestita da Natuurmonumenten ed è inaccessibile.
