Attraverso l'estrazione di torba nella vasta e bassa area paludosa, nei secoli XVI si sono formati qui i Laghi di Langeraar, composti da tre laghi separati da argini di torba: il Zuidplas (circa 65 ha), il Noord- o Oostplas (circa 65 ha) e il Geerplas (circa 35 ha). Gli argini di torba (o muri di torba) si sono formati perché le strisce relativamente strette utilizzate come strade non furono bonificate. I laghi sono collegati tra loro, sebbene al momento, a causa di esperimenti per migliorare la qualità dell'acqua, il collegamento tra il Noordplas e il Geerpolder Plas sia stato chiuso.
