Dal 2011, il festival si tiene nell'area eventi di Biddinghuizen accanto a Walibi Holland in Flevoland. Negli anni dal 2003 al 2010, il festival si svolgeva sulla spiaggia di Almeerder. Dal 2011, ogni anno viene allestito un campeggio accanto all'area del festival. Il festival è organizzato da Q-dance. Il nome Defqon.1 deriva dal termine militare americano DEFCON, dove DEFCON 1 rappresenta il livello più alto di prontezza. In Olanda, ciò è comparabile a GRIP Rijk.
