Nel XIX secolo venivano ancora spesso costruite case economiche per lavoratori di qualità molto mediocre, nel XX secolo si cercò di costruire case di buona qualità anche per i lavoratori. Questo avvenne a volte, ma non sempre, sotto forma dei vecchi cortili di beneficenza, ossia attorno a un cortile interno accessibile tramite un cancello, nella convinzione che la tranquillità e la chiusura di un simile cortile favorissero il senso di comunità. A Scheveningen sono stati costruiti due cortili in questo modo, di cui il cortile al Drogersdijk 17-77 è quello che è stato meglio conservato nello stato originale.
