La chiesa fu fondata nel XIII secolo. I tre livelli inferiori della torre sono in pietra tufacea. Nel XIII secolo la torre fu innalzata e la chiesa divenne a tre navate con strette finestre gotiche. Nel XIV secolo la chiesa romanogotica, grazie ad ampliamenti, divenne una chiesa a croce. Le navate trasversali sono più grandi di una delle campate. La navata centrale ha una volta a cupola. Sul soffitto ci sono affreschi. L'organo del 1788 è stato realizzato da Lambertus van Dam. Nella torre della chiesa pende una campana fusa nel 1662 da Jurrien Balthasar. Sulla campana è presente, tra l'altro, lo stemma di Aernt van Hillama, membro di una famiglia nobile, che all'epoca abitava il castello di Hillama.
