Praça D. João II è stata ristrutturata nel 2001.
Mostra ai visitatori diverse celebrazioni delle Scoperte portoghesi , come i modelli delle “cinque parti del mondo”, il Lago delle Sirene , diverse fontane sferiche e, soprattutto, una grande meridiana .
Il nome della piazza si riferisce al re che ordinò la costruzione della vicina dogana.
Le numerose fontane sferiche che sgorgano dal terreno sono sorprendenti, così come un moderno monumento in metallo circondato da un lago in cui si erge una statua di una sirena . In cima alla piazza si trovano la cappella Socorro e il punto panoramico.
