Il monastero di Sumela costruito su un dirupo a strapiombo sulla valle dell'Altindere a 1200 metri di altitudine, nella regione di Maçka, provincia di Trebisonda in Turchia. Oggi parzialmente restaurato dal governo turco, è una delle principale attrattive del parco nazionale di Altındere.
La tradizione lo vuole fondato nel 386 sotto il regno di Teodosio I da due eremiti, Barnabas e Sophronius, che scoprirono nelle grotte della montagna una icona della Vergine Maria e decisero di costruirvi un monastero a lei dedicato.
