Description

Waarom we best plankton bestuderen voor ons klimaat? Dat vertelt Ed Yong in An Immense World. Er is namelijk een link tussen plankton en wolkformatie. In de oceanen geeft plankton de molecule DMS vrij als het wordt opgegeten door krillgarnaalachtige dieren, die op hun beurt worden opgegeten door walvissen, vissen en zeevogels. DMS lost niet gemakkelijk op in water en komt uiteindelijk in de lucht terecht. Als het hoog genoeg stijgt in de atmosfeer creëert het wolken.
