Het kasteel Rif ligt in de kadastrale gemeente Taxach van de stad Hallein in het district Hallein van de deelstaat Salzburg. Het is beschermd als monument. In een oorkonde van graaf Berengar van Sulzbach verschijnt in 1125 de naam van een Fridericus de Rifaren, die men in Rif kan lokaliseren. In een oorkonde uitgegeven door keizer Friedrich II is de naam Riue opgenomen, die is afgeleid van het Latijnse ripa; het bijbehorende goed was eigendom van het Salzburgse domein.
