Met de bouw van de basiliek werd begonnen in 1857, naar aanleiding van het dogma van de Onbevlekte Ontvangenis in 1854. Monseigneur Malou, bisschop van Brugge, wilde een monumentale kerk voor gans zijn bisdom, om dit dogma te eren. De plannen waren van de Engelse architect Edward Welby Pugin. De kerk van Dadizele werd tot basiliek verheven in 1882 door Paus Leo XIII. Naast de Heilige Bloedkapel in Brugge de enige basiliek in het bisdom.
De prachtige glasramen verhalen naast de geschiedenis van de kerk ook verschillende feiten uit het leven van Maria.
In de crypte zien we de graftombe, de sporen, de handschoenen en het zwaard van Ridder Jan van Dadizele. De basiliek is een beschermd monument.
