Olsene heeft in de geschiedenisboeken de reputatie een 'heksendorp' te zijn. In zijn boek 'Het gevecht met de Duivel: heksen in Vlaanderen' (1999) vermeldt Fernand Vanhemelryck Olsene zelfs een twaalftal keer in verband met heksenprocessen. Er wordt zelfs gesproken over een heksensabbat in de jaren 1660 in Olsene. De heksen hielden hun diabolische danspartijen en vergaderingen op de 'toveressencnock' (de tovenaressenhoek) aan de weg Gent-Kortrijk. Rond 1660 werden in Olsene heksenprocessen gevoerd en mensen ter dood gebracht op de brandstapel. In afwachting werden zij gevangen gezet op het neerhof van het Hof Ter Wallen, het huidige kasteel van Olsene, dat teruggaat tot einde 11e eeuw. De bossen of bosjes tussen Olsene Grot en de huidige nieuwe Leie werden vroeger ook wel de 'heksenbossen' genoemd.
