Voor een ander liefdesverhaal trekken we naar het Paleis op de Meir. Dit pand uit de achttiende eeuw was nog eigendom van Napoleon, Willem I der Nederlanden en het Belgische koningshuis. “Zo verbleef koning Albert I er kort tijdens de Eerste Wereldoorlog, toen hij zijn residentie in Brussel moest verlaten. Toen er bommen in de buurt vielen, stuurde Elisabeth haar kinderen naar Engeland, maar bleef ze zelf hier, dicht bij haar man.”
We lopen de De Keyserlei af naar de Zoo, een fijne plek om met je geliefde de rust op te zoeken. “Wanneer de flamingo’s elkaars bek naar elkaar toe buigen, lijken ze wel een hartje te vormen”, glimlacht Lou. “Bovendien was de Zoo de plek voor de koppels in de belle époque om een dagje met elkaar door te brengen of iemand op te scharrelen.”
We eindigen aan het LoveLock-monument op de Godefriduskaai, ontworpen door interieurarchitect Bart De Beule voor evenementenzaak Maison Clic’Eau. “Sinds 2017 kreeg het een plek op de kaai. Sindsdien hebben al veel koppels hun slot hier gehangen. Maar er is nog veel plaats voor nieuwe”, glimlacht onze gids.
