Lamoraal graaf van Egmont is waarschijnlijk de belangrijkste figuur uit de geschiedenis van Zottegem. Hij was heer van Zottegem en was een van de grootste feodale grondbezitters in de tijd van Keizer Karel. Op bevel van de hertog van Alva werd de graaf in 1568 in onthoofd vanwege zijn bekommernissen om godsdienstvrijheid te bekomen. Op de markt vind je zijn standbeeld. Opmerkelijk is dat er op amper 500 m een identiek standbeeld staat. Iets verder staat het Egmontmontkasteel.
Onder de Onze-Lieve-Vrouw Hemelvaartkerk op de markt bevindt zich de grafkelder van Egmont, waar de stoffelijke resten en deze van zijn vrouw Sabina van Beieren bewaard worden.
