Nieuwpoort is een stad en badplaats aan de Belgische Kust. Nieuwpoort zelf bestaat eigenlijk uit twee delen, Nieuwpoort-Stad en Nieuwpoort-Bad. Daarnaast behoren tot de gemeente ook de dorpjes Sint-Joris en Ramskapelle. De stad telt ruim 11.600 inwoners .Isera Portus, de eerste naam voor Nieuwpoort dook in 1150 in geschriften op. Later sprak men van Neo Portus en Novum Oppidum. Novus Portus is de benaming die het ten slotte haalde. Nieuwpoort is zo benoemd in tegenstelling met de oude haven, namelijk Lombardsijde , die reeds sinds voor 1115 op Testerep aan de overkant van de IJzer bestaat.
