De bedenker van Jommeke, Jef Nys (1927-2009), had heel wat familie in Koksijde en verbleef ook regelmatig aan de kust in Koksijde. In 1992 gebruikt Jef Nys de kustgemeente voor een deel van de locaties in het verhaal De mandoline van Caroline. Datzelfde jaar bracht Stripfestival Koksijde een mooie expo en publiceerde een speciale editie van de strip met extra pagina’s. Meer dan 30 jaar later eren Nys’ opvolgers opnieuw de band met Koksijde in de stripreeks. Het skelet van potvis Valentijn kreeg in 2024 niet alleen een definitieve rustplaats in NAVIGO Visserijmuseum, het dier is ook vereeuwigd in het door Standaard Uitgeverij uitgegeven Jommekesalbum Potvis Valentijn. De fietsroute laat u kennismaken met een greep locaties die de rijke visserijverhalen van Koksijde levendig houden.
