De Brugse geleerde en uitvinder Simon Stevin deed zijn beroemde valproeven op de toren van Delft in de 16de eeuw waarmee hij bewees dat zwaardere en lichte objecten even snel vallen. Dit in tegenstelling tot wat Aristoteles ooit beweerde en toen algemeen aanvaard werd. Later zou Galilei de proef overdoen aan de beroemde toren van Pisa. Galilei werd er door beroemd. Weinigen weten dat het eerder door Simon Stevin eerder werd gedaan.
