Met de uitgraving van het Canal du Centre, een herinnering aan het industriële verleden van de streek, wordt in 1882 aangevat. Om een hoogteverschil van 70 meter over een afstand van 21 km mogelijk te maken, wordt het kanaal voorzien van vier hydraulische liften die gebouwd worden tussen 1888 en 1917.
Twee identieke bakken rusten er op een hydraulische pers die ondersteund wordt door een zuiger. Met behulp van een overwicht van 30 cm water dat aan de bovenste bak toegevoegd wordt, zakt hij terwijl de andere stijgt. Elke lift werd gekoppeld aan een machineruimte.
Als grote toeristische trekpleisters prijken deze vier hydraulische scheepsliften sinds 1998 op de werelderfgoedlijst van Unesco.
