De kerk van Saint-Ursmer van Lobbes mag als de oudste kerk van Wallonië worden beschouwd.
Zeker het schip en de twee dwarsschepen stammen uit het Karolingische tijdperk.
De kerk werd aangepast vanaf het einde van de 11de eeuw – of volgens recent onderzoek vanaf het einde van de 10de eeuw, de periode waarin een kloosterkapittel werd gebouwd. Zo werd het koor uitgebreid en werd de grote, deels ingegraven en nog steeds bewaarde crypte veranderd.
