Als eerbetoon aan de duizenden gesneuvelde soldaten uit de regio kijkt het robuuste standbeeld van Valeir sinds 1953 uit over het marktplein van Gavere. De naam verwijst naar een soldaat die in 1453 meevocht in de Slag bij Gavere, waarbij de Gentse troepen verslagen werden door Filips de Goede.
