Galmaarden is een plaats en gemeente in het Pajottenland, provincie Vlaams-Brabant in België. De gemeente bestaat naast Galmaarden nog uit de deelgemeenten Tollembeek en Vollezele en telt ruim 8800 inwoners.De oudste vermelding van Galmaarden komt voor in de stichtingsoorkonde van Geraardsbergen van 1068. Het grondgebied van Galmaarden bevond zich van de karolingische tijden tot de elfde eeuw in de Brabantgouw. Toen veroverde de gouwgraaf van de Henegouw, die ten zuiden van de Hene lag, een deel van de gouw Brabant. Binnen het graafschap Henegouwen behoorde Galmaarden tot de kasselrij Aat.
