Tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog is er in de hele Ardennen zwaar gevochten, zo ook in Poteau. Het kruispunt in het dorp was een belangrijk verbindingspunt tussen St.Vith en Vielsalm en moest door de Amerikanen vrij gehouden worden. In december 1944 liep een Amerikaanse eenheid in een hinderlaag van het Duitse leger op de weg tussen Recht en Poteau. Na de oorlog was Poteau grotendeels verwoest en moesten bijna alle panden weer herbouwd worden. De wederopbouw van de boerderijen en woningen werd uitgevoerd door Vlamingen en gebeurde met de materialen die op dat moment voorhanden waren.
