Hendrik Conscience - bekend van onder meer ‘De leeuw van Vlaanderen’ en ‘De Loteling’ - hield veel van de Kempen. In Zoersel en Schilde kwam hij helemaal tot rust. Hij nodigde er vaak vrienden uit om samen te genieten van de natuur. Zo wandelde hij graag in het Zoerselbos, het decor voor enkele van zijn verhalen.
