Eenstijlige meidoorn

Description

Deze meidoorn (Crataegus monogyna) behoort tot de roosachtigen, net als appels en peren. Het is een doornige struik of kleine boom die heel oud kan worden. De vruchtjes zijn bol- of eivormig, ongeveer één cm lang, dieprood en rijp in september. De bessen geven de vogels voedsel in de winter.

Vóór de uitvinding van de prikkeldraad werd de meidoorn, vaak samen met andere doornstruiken, gebruikt als haag om het vee in de weide te houden. Zo'n hagen werden vaak gelegd of gevlochten om het vee nog beter binnen te houden.
