Het gebied is een schitterend voorbeeld van het samengaan van natuur en techniek. Dat de Gulke Putten bewaard bleven als heidegebied, heeft te maken met het Radio-Elektrisch Centrum in Wingene-Ruiselede. De omgeving van de zendmasten moest open en bosvrij gehouden worden. Er werd dus volop gemaaid en gekapt, zodat de heide bewaard bleef. Het Zendstation is nu nog in werking, terwijl de oude radiozendinstallaties als industriële archeologie beschermd zijn. Wie dieper het natuurgebied in wil, kan dit doen in groep o.l.v. een gids of via de wandelingen voor Natuurpuntleden. www.natuurpunt.be
