Het dorp ligt op de samenvloeiing van de rivieren Ourthe en Amblève en dankt zijn naam hieraan (« confluentes » – « confluent »). Comblain werd reeds bewoond in het mésolithitische tijdperk. De "Ontdekkingenvan Comblain" (grotten, vleermuizencentrum, ondergrondse steengroeve, museum van het Land van Ourthe-Amblève en openluchtmuseum van de Sint Maartenstoren) zijn een bezoek waard.
